Driving in the USA With a Foreign Licence

Driving in the USA is regulated at the state level, not federally, so requirements vary slightly from one state to the next. As a general rule, tourists and short-term visitors may drive on a valid licence issued by their home country for the duration of their visit, provided the licence is current and they meet the state's minimum driving age.

There is no federal law that forces every foreign visitor to hold an IDP. That said, several states explicitly recommend or require an IDP or an official translation when the licence is written in a language other than English. Because the rule depends on where you drive, carrying an IDP removes the guesswork across state lines.

An IDP becomes most useful when your licence is not in English or does not use the Latin alphabet. The IDP is an official multilingual booklet that translates your existing licence, so an officer or rental agent who cannot read your home document can still verify your name, photo and the vehicle categories you are entitled to drive.

A certified driving licence translation serves a similar purpose, presenting your licence details in clear English. If you are unsure which a particular state or rental company prefers, an IDP is the more widely recognised choice because it is backed by international convention rather than a single company's policy.

Major US rental companies generally accept a foreign licence, but their internal policies differ. Many will rent to you on your home licence alone if it is in English, while others ask for an IDP to confirm the licence is genuine and to read non-English categories.

To avoid being turned away at the counter, check the specific rental company's terms before you travel and bring an IDP if your licence is in another language. Also confirm the minimum rental age, as some companies charge a young-driver surcharge or set a higher minimum than the state driving age.

Driving on a foreign licence is a short-term allowance for visitors, not a permanent solution. If you become a resident of a state, you are usually expected to obtain a state driver's licence within a set period after establishing residency, and an IDP does not extend that grace period.

An IDP can still help in the transition, giving you a recognised English-language version of your licence while you book your state test and gather documents. Once you hold a state licence, you no longer need the IDP for driving within the USA.
